STUDIO TONE GENERATOR

RED IGUANA STUDIO
[Announcement] We’ve Released a Free Online Test Tone Oscillator: “STUDIO TONE GENERATOR”【EN】
RED IGUANA STUDIO is pleased to announce the release of a free web tool called “STUDIO TONE GENERATOR.” It’s a test tone oscillator that lets you generate reference signals — sine, square, triangle, and sawtooth waves, along with white and pink noise — directly in your browser, no installation required. We built it to answer the small, practical “let’s just check that” moments in the field: verifying speakers or headphones, troubleshooting wiring and connections, or building a reliable pitch reference for your ear.

What is STUDIO TONE GENERATOR
In the field, there are countless moments that call for confirming a very basic question before evaluating anything else: is the signal actually getting through correctly? When you bring in a new pair of speakers or headphones, change a cable run, or notice something feels off between left and right — what you need at that moment is a reference signal you can trust completely. STUDIO TONE GENERATOR was built to generate exactly that kind of signal, right in your browser, with no extra setup.
It plays four waveforms — sine, square, triangle, and sawtooth — as well as white and pink noise. Frequency runs from 20Hz to 20kHz, and can be set either by direct numeric input or via preset buttons. There’s nothing to install and no dedicated app to download; it runs the moment you open the URL.
Key Features
- A range of waveforms and noise types: Switch freely between four waveforms — sine, square, triangle, sawtooth — plus white noise and pink noise.
- Direct frequency input and presets: Enter any frequency from 20Hz to 20kHz directly, or jump straight to octave bands and tuning references (A4 = 440Hz) using the preset buttons: 20 / 31.5 / 63 / 100 / 125 / 250 / 440(A4) / 500 / 1k / 2k / 4k / 8k / 10k / 16k / 20k.
- Per-channel output control: Choose L / BOTH / R for output, with independent mute switches for the left and right channels — ideal for testing a single channel or comparing left-right balance.
- Limiter: A LIMITER ON toggle acts as a safeguard against unexpectedly loud input, protecting your gear, your speakers, and — most importantly — your ears.
- Output gain control: Fine-tune output level with the Output Gain control, and start, stop, or reload playback with a single tap.
Ways You Can Use It
The tool is designed with equipment checks in mind, but in practice it lends itself to a much wider range of situations.
- Speaker and headphone verification: Confirm that both channels of newly installed or recently repaired gear are producing sound correctly.
- Cable and wiring troubleshooting: Isolate suspected breaks or loose connections by switching between L and R output.
- Relay and connection checks: In broadcast or streaming setups, run a reference signal through the chain to confirm that equipment is connected and passing signal correctly.
- Tuning reference: Use the 440Hz (A4) sine wave as a tuning reference for instruments, or as an ear-training reference.
- Simple frequency response checks: Use the octave-band presets to get a rough sense of how monitor speakers or headphones behave across different frequency ranges.
- Working with noise: Use white or pink noise to check for self-noise in equipment, or as a masking sound.
- Teaching and demonstrations: Let students or workshop participants actually hear the difference between waveforms, or between high and low frequencies, in real time.
A single function — a trustworthy reference signal — turns out to apply to a surprising number of real-world situations. That versatility is, we think, one of the quiet strengths of STUDIO TONE GENERATOR.
How to Use It
Select a waveform (or noise type) under WAVEFORM, set the frequency using a preset or direct input, choose L / BOTH / R under CHANNEL, and press “▶ PLAY” to start. We plan to cover detailed operation and feature walkthroughs in a separate article down the line.
One important note: if you’re using headphones, please turn your device volume down before pressing play. Reference tones don’t have the dynamic variation of music, so they can feel noticeably louder than expected.
Terms of Use
STUDIO TONE GENERATOR is free for anyone to use. No advance notice or permission is required, and commercial use is fine. That said, unauthorized copying, redistribution, or reproduction of the tool’s source code, design, or underlying mechanisms is prohibited. The tool is provided as-is, and we cannot guarantee uninterrupted availability or that it will always function exactly as intended.
You can start using the tool right away from the page below.
RED IGUANA STUDIO’s Perspective
In work that deals with sound, the first thing you need to be able to trust is a simple, well-understood signal. Before you can judge anything as complex as a piece of music or a carefully crafted mix, you first need to confirm that the wiring and the signal chain are sound — and if that foundation gets skipped, every judgment built on top of it starts to wobble. This matters most in the moment something goes wrong: how quickly you can isolate the cause often sets the tone for the rest of the session. Is it the gear? The cable? The connection further down the chain? By running a known, trustworthy signal through the chain one step at a time, you can rule out one suspect after another. Supporting that quiet, methodical process of elimination is, we believe, the real job of STUDIO TONE GENERATOR. It isn’t a flashy tool. But making the unglamorous work of “checking” as fast and as reliable as possible is exactly the kind of craftsmanship we care about. Building an environment where you never have to doubt your reference — that, we believe, is the first step toward supporting genuinely high-quality production. We’ll keep building tools, one at a time and with care, for the things people in the field actually need.
